The Significance of Synthetic Diamonds

In recent years, the market for diamonds has been shaken up by the introduction of synthetic, or man-made, diamonds. These stones are chemically and physically identical to natural diamonds, but they come with a much lower price tag. So, are synthetic diamonds the real deal? Let’s take a closer look. What Are Synthetic Diamonds?

Synthetic diamonds are created in a laboratory setting using one of two methods: high pressure/high temperature (HPHT) synthesis or chemical vapor deposition (CVD). HPHT synthesis involves subjecting a carbon-containing material to extremely high temperatures and pressures; over time, this process results in the formation of a diamond. CVD, on the other hand, involves heating a Carbon-containing gas until it breaks down into atomic carbon deposits; these deposits eventually coalesce to form a diamond.

Are Synthetic Diamonds Lower Quality?

In short, no. Synthetic diamonds are physically and chemically indistinguishable from natural diamonds. This means that they have the same hardness (10 on the Mohs Scale), optical properties, density, and refractive index as natural diamonds. In other words, the only way to tell a synthetic diamond from a natural one is through advanced testing in a laboratory setting – and even then, it can be difficult to tell them apart.

So, if synthetic diamonds are just as good as natural ones, why aren’t they more popular? The answer comes down to price. Synthetic diamonds cost significantly less than natural ones because they can be produced in large quantities and don’t require extensive mining operations. As a result, couples on a tight budget may opt for synthetic engagement rings instead of natural ones.

The bottom line is that synthetic diamonds are every bit as good as their natural counterparts – but they come at a fraction of the price. So, if you’re looking for an engagement ring or other piece of jewelry on a budget, synthetic diamonds may be the way to go.
